All smiles for Cheshire charity’s 10th Anniversary Ball!

Cheshire-based perinatal mental health charity, Smile Group, hosted a celebratory ball to mark its 10th anniversary, with 100 attendees at De Vere Cranage Hall Estate near Holmes Chapel.

The event successfully raised £2,889 and was an opportunity to reflect on the charity’s achievements, having supported more than 1,000 families experiencing perinatal mental health challenges across Cheshire East in the last decade.

Supported by local business partners*, the Anniversary Ball brought together the team, parents, trustees, volunteers, stakeholders and local businesses. Attendees enjoyed a delicious three-course meal and were entertained by magician Nick Barnes, before dancing the night away courtesy of DJ Rich Fleury.

Moving speeches were given by Co-founder Ruth Williams as well as parents who had been supported by Smile and shared openly how it had made such a positive impact on them at a vulnerable time in their lives.

Having launched in 2011, Cheshire mums, Ruth Williams and Natalie Nuttall noticed a glaring gap in community support following personal experiences of postnatal depression. With 20% of new and expectant mums experiencing perinatal mental health challenges, Smile Group provides a blend of services in the local community, including weekly support groups in Macclesfield, Congleton, Sandbach and Nantwich as well as 1-1 talk therapy, home visits, monthly family sessions and fortnightly wellbeing walks.

Smile is cited in the Royal College of GPs’ Perinatal Mental Health Toolkit and is the East Cheshire Chamber of Commerce’s Charity of the Year. With a growing team of employees and volunteers, Smile also has ambitions to develop a service dedicated specifically to providing support for dads in the perinatal period.

Commenting on the Anniversary Ball, Ruth Williams, Co-founder and Operations Director, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the number of attendees who showed their support for Smile. It was a fabulous evening to reflect on how far we have some and a chance to say thank you to everyone who has been part of our growth story. Unfortunately, Covid restrictions meant we couldn’t celebrate in 2021, however we more than made up for it on the night!”
