Cheshire-based perinatal mental health charity, Smile Group, has secured support from the Co-op Local Community Fund and is teaming up with Everybody Sport and Recreation in Holmes Chapel to launch fortnightly wellbeing walks for expectant and new parents.

Set up in 2011 by two mums with lived experience, Smile Group provides peer support groups, talk therapy, home visits and 1-1 support for parents experiencing emotional wellbeing challenges in the pre and postnatal period.

With existing services in Macclesfield, Congleton, Sandbach and Nantwich, contributions from the Co-op Local Community Fund will enable parents in Holmes Chapel to meet at the Taste for Life Café at Holmes Chapel Community Centre from 28th March at 1pm on a fortnightly basis and participate in a short walk with peers led by Smile’s Wellbeing Practitioners.

The Wellbeing Walks give new and expectant parents the opportunity to bring along their babies and little ones (under the age of three) and meet with others facing similar challenges. This also gives the opportunity to chat and be supported by the Smile team while enjoying fresh air and gentle exercise, to enhance mood.

Commenting on the launch of Holmes Chapel Wellbeing Walks, Ruth Williams, Operations Director of Smile said: “Smile thrives on local community partnerships, so we’re thrilled to be working with Everybody Sport and Recreation and supported by the Co-op Local Community Fund. Our Wellbeing Walks are free, accessible and will be a lovely way for new and expectant parents to benefit from emotional support while meeting others going through a similar experience.”

Donna Williamson Senior Manager, Health Innovation at Everybody Sport and Recreation shares: We are delighted to partner with Smile Group with these Wellbeing Walks in Holmes Chapel to support the community and help to reach people who might need their support. Our Taste for Life Café at Holmes Chapel Community Centre will be used to host the walk, a place where the community can meet prior to the walk starting and a chance to socialise. We look forward to helping map the walks with the Smile team.

Alison Wright Co-op Member Pioneer added: “We’re delighted to have Smile Group as one of our selected Local Causes in Holmes Chapel for this year. We’re encouraging all Co-op members to support local causes, so every time they use their blue members’ card, they are donating money to help families in the community via the Wellbeing Walks. By downloading the Co-op App, members can keep updated with our fundraising totals.”

Parents wishing to take part in the Wellbeing Walks in Holmes Chapel are requested to book by contacting and complete a self-referral form prior to the walk.
